How to Get to the National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai): Metro, Airports, Rail and Practical Tips

Metro routes from Pudong Airport, Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 and Hongqiao Railway Station to NECC Shanghai via Lines 2 and 17.

The National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai), or NECC Shanghai, sits in the Hongqiao area. For international visitors, the easiest way to plan the trip is not to memorize one “best route,” but to start with where you are coming from: Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, Pudong Airport, or central Shanghai.

What You Can Find Here

From Hongqiao Airport or Hongqiao Railway Station

If you arrive through the Hongqiao transport hub, NECC is already in the same part of Shanghai.

Your main options

  • Metro Line 2 — useful if your entrance is closer to the west side of the venue.
  • Metro Line 17 — you can transfer at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, continue to National Exhibition and Convention Center Station, and use Exit 15 for the North Square area.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing — useful with large luggage, several people travelling together, or when you need to reach a specific entrance directly.

Practical tip

Major trade shows can bring heavy passenger volumes around both Hongqiao and NECC. Before leaving, check three things together:

  • the entrance recommended by your event organiser;
  • your real-time route in a map app;
  • any temporary traffic or venue notices for that day.

From Pudong Airport

Pudong Airport and NECC are on opposite sides of Shanghai.

For public transport, Metro Line 2 is one of the simplest main routes to understand. If Line 17 makes sense for your final approach, transfer at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station.

One point is easy to misunderstand: Line 17 itself does not connect either Pudong Airport or Hongqiao Airport. It serves NECC, but it is not an airport-to-venue line.

⚠️ CRITICAL MISCONCEPTIONS TO AVOID

  • No direct airport link: Line 17 does not run directly to Pudong (PVG) or Hongqiao (SHA) airports. For airport journeys, Line 2 remains the main cross-city rail corridor, and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is the clear transfer point if you want to continue on Line 17.
  • Do not assume a conventional Line 2 / Line 17 interchange at NECC: around the venue, follow live navigation and on-site signs rather than assuming the transfer works like a standard same-station interchange you may be used to elsewhere.

Two practical options

  • Public transport — suitable if you have light luggage and enough time.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing — useful for groups, heavy luggage or direct access to a specific entrance.

Metro Line 2 vs. Line 17

NECC can currently be reached by Metro Line 2 and Line 17.

Line 2

National Exhibition and Convention Center Station provides access toward the western side of the venue and its registration areas.

Line 17

At National Exhibition and Convention Center Station, Exit 15 is close to the North Square and gives access toward the North Registration Hall area.

Choosing between the two lines

If you are starting from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, both lines may be useful. The better choice depends on your event entrance, the hall you need and current passenger flow. Use real-time navigation and station signage for the final transfer and exit choice.

Getting in and leaving after the show

NECC is a very large venue, and different shows may use different registration halls.

Before you travel, confirm:

  1. which hall your show is in;
  2. which entrance is open that day;
  3. where visitor registration or ID checks take place.

Setting “NECC Shanghai” as your destination is only the first step. The specific entrance can materially affect how far you need to walk.

When leaving

At the end of a major event, metro stations and road traffic can become busy at the same time.

Depending on your next stop, you can consider:

  • entering the metro immediately;
  • waiting for a taxi or ride-hailing car;
  • walking to a less congested pick-up point;
  • having a meal or short break nearby before leaving the area.

Food and pacing your exhibition day

At a large show, the issue is usually not “there is nowhere to eat.” It is that lunch demand concentrates into a short period and queues can be unpredictable.

A few practical options:

  • if you have priority exhibitors or forums in the morning, move your main meal outside the busiest lunch window;
  • check whether the organiser publishes food locations;
  • if you still have several halls to cover in the afternoon, avoid travelling too far away for lunch;
  • for a longer business discussion, consider meeting in the wider Hongqiao business district rather than forcing it into the busiest part of the venue.

Where to stay

If most of your trip revolves around NECC, compare accommodation by what your schedule actually needs.

For a broader comparison of locations, see our guide on where to stay for Shanghai trade shows.

Near the venue

Useful for:

  • multi-day exhibitions;
  • early starts;
  • minimising daily commuting.

Around the Hongqiao transport hub

Useful for:

  • high-speed rail;
  • domestic flights;
  • continuing to other Chinese cities;
  • itineraries with several business locations.

Closer to central Shanghai

Useful when the exhibition is only one part of a wider Shanghai trip and you also have meetings, dinners or visits in the city.

There is no single area that fits every itinerary. A simple way to decide is to ask which of these will consume the most time: the exhibition venue, the airport/rail hub, or your business meetings.
